Candlelight Vigil for Religious Freedom

candlelight vigil for religious freedom

The International Bill of Human Rights

The International Bill of Human Rights comprises the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 2 (1), it is stated that each State Party to the present Covenant undertakes to respect and to ensure to all individuals within its territory and subject to its jurisdiction the rights recognized in the present Covenant, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. That to me implies every human being is guaranteed religious freedom. Malaysia is party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Refer to Love and Compassion - that is what every Malaysian should practice to see how well Malaysia is living up to the Convention to which Malaysia is a party to.

Anyone who would like to support this are encouraged to take a digital photo of your own version of a candlelight vigil and attach it to an email to

add a message if you wish, and we will do the rest. You may also let me know if you want other just causes you would like to support with a candlelight vigil of your own.

Candlelight Vigil for the cancer victims

Mike Rogers (Whizzed) of Sunshine Coast, Queensland, will like to take up the cause in sympathy with cancer victims. This cause touched a chord in my heart because I lost my late wife to breast cancer. Here is his contribution to this worthwhile cause:

Here is our family candlelight vigil plus memorial for my late, brave wife, Kok Yoke Yoon, a cancer victim, and wonderful late mother of 5 children, late mother-in-law of two sons-in-law (one MIA or Missing in Action because he is in London, plus late grandmother to the "youngest blogger" in the world":

She had been her cheerful self right to the end.

Update 9 April 2008: Wanted to upload this photo of the candlelight vigil in memory of Kok Yoke Yoon by the Kok extended family, but waited too long for clearance from everyone for permission to put it on the Web. Now I can't find the large format photo and can only get this almost thumbnail size photo from a Facebook group. Well, late is better than never and small is better than nothing. Here is the candlelight vigil from the Kok extended family in memory of the cheerful Kok Yoke Yoon:

Candlelight Vigil for Human Rights

Today, 10 December, 2007 is International Human Rights Day celebrated all over the world. Every year, the Malaysia Bar had always held a peaceful Walk for Human Rights to celebrate the event. It had always been peaceful, caused no disruption to traffic and caused no one any harm. This year, the Malaysia Bar Council decided to have a 2.5 kilometre march in Kuala Lumpur (People’s Freedom Walk) on Sunday, 9 December, 2007, but was asked to apply for a police permit. The Bar Council felt it an affront to have to apply for a police permit for a peaceful event as the right to free speech, free expression and free assembly is enshrined in the Constitution. They decided to cancel the Walk instead. However, a group of determined lawyers decided to go ahead anyway and invited the public to join in. A group of lawyers plus supporters gathered in front of the Sogo department store in the normally congested Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman starting from 8am (it was early Sunday, so the road was practically free of traffic) in the presence of many police officers as well as a helicopter flying overhead.

The walk started peacefully at around 8.45am I think. Before the participants could reach their destination, the Malaysia Bar headquarter, five prominent lawyers and two arrested other demonstrators were arrested, but the march went on. Later, Edmund Bon, the Bar's Human Rights Committee Chairman was also arrested at the Bar's own private premises.

This is a candlelight vigil in protest against the violation of Human Rights in Malaysia and at the same time also in support for those citizens of other countries where human rights are violated too:

Later the same night, there was another peaceful candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) in protest against the arrests. I will upload the photo later.

If you would like to lend your support to human rights for citizens of Malaysia as well as the rest of the world, I hope you will email us and attach a photo of your version of your candlelight vigil to

add a message if you wish, and we will do the rest.

Candlelight Vigil for people of Tibet

In the year I was born, 1949, Tibet, previously an independent nation with its own government, religion, language, laws and customs, was invaded by China and up till now is still an occupied country.

The Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (CTA), is a government in exile They claimed to be the rightful and legitimate government of Tibet and is considered the Tibetan Government in Exile.

This is a digital candlelight vigil in support of the Tibetan people for their right to self determination. It is a small step, but we hope others who are of similar sentiments will help add to this just cause. All you need to do is to attach a photo of your candlelight vigil to

add a message if you wish, and we will do the rest.

Peaceful Digital Candlelight Vigil for Bangsa Malaysia (Malaysia race)

We look forward to the day our country Malaysians consider each other as Malaysians and not as Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Bidayus, Dayaks, etc. Let us look forward to the day when decisions and policies are no longer made along racial line, and when we a required to sign forms, we no longer have to fill in our race or religion. Let this as the beginning of a peaceful and legal campaign.

50 years after Independence, politics and official policies are still carried out along racial line.
